Great.Zimbabwe.(Ancient.City).HISTORIA Pt 1

Alright. I know it seems a bit long..but this video and its second part are wonderful summaries of the Great Zimbabwe Empire. Historians talk about the history of the empire, and you are taken on a virtual tour through the ruins. I found it EXTREMELY interesting and very helpful with my understanding of the civilization. A lot of the information in these videos is information I have discovered from my own research. Stupendous!

Zimbabwe Bird Sculptures

Here are a couple of the 8 famous soapstone bird sculptures. These sculptures are the most famous works of art from the era of the Great Zimbabwe. They were discovered among the rubble of the civilization's ruins in the 19th century by treasure hunters. Each bird measures approximately 16 inches tall. They are each made to be placed upon columns a yard tall. What is interesting about these birds is they have both bird AND human characteristics. For example, instead of beaks they have human lips, and instead of claws they have 5 toed feet. They are said to be possible emblems of kings and past ancestors of the Great Zimbabwe. The bird symbol is also used today as Zimbabwe's national symbol, in comparison to the United States eagle. The bird is even on their flag!
